Honda Meets Rune Goldberg

This is a commercial for a new Honda station wagon. I would consider this to be a hack. Rune Goldberg takes apart a Honda car and reassembles it into a new creation shown at the end. Hack means to go inside and make changes and when I see all the cars parts throughout the commercial it makes me think of hack.

HP Vera Wang

I consider this commercial to be a mod. Vera Wang is a creator of 3d scenes for commercials. Throughout the commercial she seems stressed about her work and seems to be making many changes. I consider these changes to be mods. She modifies her creation to make it better.

Burton Snowboard HP

I would also consider this commercial to be a mod. In the commercial Jake Burton talks about making snowboards from scratch years ago wearing a scuba mask while applying polyurethane. Since then he has made many mods and owns the most successful snowboard company on earth.

Beer Launching Fridge:

I would consider the fridge to be pimped. The definition of Pimp is-
To make something better and more pleasing than it previously was. To change something for the better.
Although the fridge was Pleasing initially, adding the arm for throwing beer makes it increasingly pleasing. I would also say that it was changed for the better. That is my opinion.

Burton Snowboard HP:

I consider this to be a Mod. The thing being changed is the companies approach.Definition-To change or update something so that it is in tune with what is considered modern.
Before, the company was using a less than modern approach in order to get the word out about their company. They finally updated to a more modern approach; using computers.

Gwen Stefani HP:

I consider this to be a mod. Gwen actually uses the expression mash-up in this commercial, but she is referring to her creative process rather than the product. The thing being modified is the potential buyers approach to creativity. Previously, the buyers approach may have been to use paper and a pencil in order to "mash-up" their ideas to produce a result. The update to using the HP is a more modern approach

The Honda ad is a Mod. I choose to asy Mod because the commercial did not pimp the car or mash the car up with something else. They took the car apart and made it do something else its still a car just taken apart so I think that this is a Mod.

The Burton commercial is a mashup. this commercial combines snowboarding with computers. They show a bunch of guys snowboarding while talking about computers and showing screen images from computers.

Even though it said the firdge has been modified right in the commercial i think the beer lauching fridge commercial is a pimp. i think it is pimp because the guy enhanced the fridge with something that will get beer for you. he didnt mash it with anything and he did modify the fridge but i think its more pimp than mod.

First video I chose was the Honda Ad and I would consider this to be a Hack. The car is taken apart so that the viewer can see everything that goes into a Honda. At the end of the video the car is put together and everything runs smoothly. You have a better understanding of what goes into a Honda vehicle after watching this.

The second video was a behind the scenes with Vera Wang and I consider this to be a mash up. They tapped a bunch of special scenes and added lots of special effects and they threw it all together so that at the end it looked like Vera Wang was doing all these things with her hands.

The third video was the one with the beer-launching refrigerator and I consider this to be a mod. He took a refigerator and added a launching system to it so that it would grab a beer and launch it to him at an appropriate speed. Now he can relax on the couch and if he gets thursty, his fridge can toss him a drink.

Honda:
I think this is a mash up. They took apart the car and put it into a completely different configuration. Although its still all of the same parts, and in the end it does the same thing, this Rune Goldberg contraption works completely differently than a car.

Vera Wang:
I would say this is a Mod. They show all the steps and changes that one must go through to make a commercial. Also, they show the different layers, the physical and the digital, of the commercial. There are many modifications made to the finished product before it is finished, so I would deffinately say its a mod.

Gwen Stefani:
I think this is mash up. The commercial itself is a conglomeration of all of the different sides of her personality. She's saying that her computer can accomodate all of the things she needs, so her personality is coming together in this product. With this product they seem to go together seemlessly.

Honda
I would consider this to be mod.Mod means updating something, i think that cars change all the time. There just different models of them. Seeing the car pars though out the commericial makes me think that some of the parts are slightly modified, therefore i believe this commericial shows mod.

Burton
I would consider this to be mod. I think that this is mod because they make the boards but change the designs and styles of the boards. Different ideas come up each year.Burton is one of the most successful snowboard companys, it is actually the only one that i have heard of.

Beer launching Fridge
I would consider this pimp because the original product was taken and made more appealing/pleasing to others. I think that the definiton of pimp is to make something more appealing/pleasing to someone.I think that this is a very creative and clever idea. I wonder why this hasnt been sold in stores yet, maybe someday it will.

I think that the Honda meets Rube Goldberg video was a hack. A disassembled honda is arranged in a way so that the parts serve the overall function to turn on an assembled honda. The way the parts of the car all hit each other to cause movement reminds me of the game "moustrap." This is a hack because the car was taken apart but given a new function that was cool looking.
I think that the Aquarium computer...mineral oil cooled video was a pimped. They took old cheap hardware and a motherboard and combined it with other inexpensive materials to create a nice looking, functional and expensive looking computer.
I think taht the beer launching fridge is an example of a mod. The already existing refridgerator kept its function and a new feature was added, an arm that will throw someone sitting on a couch his or her beer. Since the fridge still kept its function I think this shows a mod.

Anonymous said...

The Honda add is an example of a Hack. The car is disassembled, each part being assigned a new function. The original function of the original form is altered through the reassignment of each parts purpose in the new design.

The HP commercial by Michael Gondry is a Mash-up. In the commercial different images are brought together, overlapped, and fused into a new reality. It looks as though he drew from different sources to create this new composite.

The beer launching fridge is an example of a product which has undergone a mod. The original fridge has been modified to create a new product. While the original integrity of the fridge is apparent, it has been altered to preform a new function. Nothing was taken away, nor greatly embelished.

Honda Meets Rune Goldberg

I would consider this commercial to be Mod. In this commericial a Honda car is being taken apart from what used to be the old car and made it into something totally new. They modified and made crucial changes to make this Honda's performace better.

Burton Snowboard HP

I think this commercial would be a Mod. In the commerical they want to boost there snowboards success so they find a new way to show the world, by HP computers.

HP Micheal Gondry

This commercial to me seems pimp. It totally alters the appereance of everything and make the main character stand out.

Honda:
This is a Hack. They took apart the whole car and showed each piece. Then from the pieces, they created a new car. Hacking something means to make changes by being destructive. Taking something apart and creating smaller pieces is hacking.

Beer Fridge:
This is a Pimp. They created a very unique but practical approach from an ordinary item. Pimping is making something more appealing to people. Creating something that allows people to drink beer and not have to go to the fridge and get it is obviously appealing to them.

Vera Wang:
This is a Mod. Throughout the video they are taking you through steps of her trying to make her product better. The definition of mod is to make something better than its original state by changing it. Throughout the video it clearly shows this.

HP Michael Gondry Commercial:

This commercial, in my opinion, is a mash up. The way Michael takes elements from different things and mashes them up into images just perfectly fits the definition of mash up. The purpose of the commercial is to show just how much you can do with a new HP computer.

Beer Launching Fridge:

The beer launching beer fridge is a perfect example of a modification to a product. This is not a pimp, because I believe that to pimp something, you are making it flashier, not necessarily better or more useful. This beer launcher literally launchers beers at you. awesome.

Honda Meets Rune Goldberg:

I believe that the honda station wagon is also a mod. The commercial shows the car being broken down, and then re-assembled. The car again was not pimped, hacked, or mashed up. The car was modified in that it is still the same Honda, but with new features and designs on it.

Honda

I think this commercial could be looked at as a hack or as a mod. It could be looked at as a hack because it took all of the different pieces that go into making a car, and put it together again into a different car. They used old pieces to make a new product. I could be a mod because it just showed the viewers all of the different steps that it takes to put a car together. We saw each part being put together and modified until it was a while car.

Beer Fridge

I think this was definitely a product that was pimped. Pimping something is making it stand out above any other similar product. A fridge that will throw you your drink is way better than any other fridge.

Burton

I think this commercial was a mashup. They combined two different products to make a commercial. They explained how the computer helped the snowboarders develop better boards. So I think they were using two different products, mashing them together to make an ad.

LindseyAubin said...

Gwen Stefani HP

I would consider this to be a Mod. In the video it says "explore creativity using HP" which basically tells that by mod-ing the computer, you can explore and use your creativity right on the computer. Things couldn't get any easier.

Honda Meets Rune Goldberg

This video clip demonstrates a mashup. The parts of a car were taken apart, and then re-put together to produce a different product. The taking apart of parts is what tells us it is a mashup, and not a mod or a pimp.

Beer Launching Fridge

This shows an everyday object that has been pimped. Something has been added to the object, in this case a fridge, to make it more convenient and user friendly. It allows the operator to hold a remote which can unlock the fridge to release a beer, allowing the person controlling the remote to not have to even get up from their seat. This could most definitely be a convenience.

Anonymous said...

The second video: HP Computer

I think that this is best represented by mod because the commercial itself is using all new technology to show the product in different ways. All the animation and things that were used in the commericial were all very modern and it was trying to show us how Hp computers are really modern and up to date.

THe 4th video: Beer Launching fridge

I think this is best represented as pimp. Clearly this person wanted to pimp out their fridge so that it could do something really cool. In this case they choose to make it so that the fridge could launch a beer at you, thus you can be lazy and not have to walk to the fridge to get it yourself.

The 5th video: Snowboard/ HP

THis is an example of mod. The rider is talking about the first snowboards and how much different they are now, and comparing them to modern snowboards. At the same time it is an advertisement for the modern computer.

Honda Ad

This Honda video was a great idea I was hooked on the commercial. This was commercial was very interesting I liked how it started out with metal balls rolling down the wooded table and it ended up starting the car at the end. I think this video is mod because new kinds of cars come out every year so better cars come out every year.

Aquarium computer

This is definitely pimp. This is such a great idea to come up with. Having a computer that will work in water would be a great invention. They added a light to the fish tank so you can see how it can work and that’s a great idea. Whoever came up with this idea will make good amount of money.

HP Vera Wang Commercial

I think this commercial would be Mash- up because there are multiple things going on throughout the one commercial it’s just not one object they focused on. This was an interesting commercial is one was probably my least favorite commercial it wasn’t as interesting because there was multiple things going on at once so it was hard to understand what was going on.

Beer Launching fridge

I think that this fridge falls into the category of being pimped. To me the defintion of pimped means to recreate something but making it so it is over the top and outrageous. The idea of a fridge that throws the beer to you so you don't have to get off the couch is over the top and outrageous in my opinion.

Honda/Rube Goldberg

I think this commercial qualifies as a hack. A hack is when something is taken apart and fixed or reconfigured and that is what is happening with the car parts. They have been taken apart and used in a different way to make the car move as it should.

Vera Wang

I think this video is a mod. We all know mod id short for "modification" and in this video you can see all the steps that are taken and the changes that are made to create this commercial. It reminds me of when we modify things we've created in class.

Jodi Ames said...

I think the first one is a hack because they took a intact car and destroyes it but it still has a purpose and is not a worthless pile of junk,

Jodi Ames said...

for the beer launching fridge iw ould cal this a a mod because he modifyed the frige to look different but mostley have the same function except it can launch beer.

"Beer Throwing Fridge"
I found this invention really funny, I didn't really take it very seriously I'm not sure if anyone would actually spend that type of money on such a thing. I would say that this is an example of "hack" because you are taking something perfectly normal as a fridge, and changing it's features in order to give you a fridge that throws beer cans at you. It's very original but not very practical.
"Vera Wang Commercial"
I would say that this is an example of mod. She is taking her clothes and changing them in order to fit the new style or look for thats fashionable right now. I really like the fact that she is the one is designing everything and doing it in her own way.
"Burton Commercial"
I would say that this is also an example sort of both mod and pimp and hack. Is a has a little bit of everything because they say that that they make the snow boards completely, then they make changes to it once its been done, and once they test them out they make changes to improve them.

Tori Green said...

The Honda commercial is a hack because it shows the inner workings of the car. It shows how it's assembeled and the final product.

The beer fridge is a mash up because it is a combination of a fridge and a launcher type thing. It is pretty pimp, but I would say it's more of a mash up because it's not as flashy or embellished as it would be if it were pimped.

The burton commerical is an example of a mod. It shows the progress and changes that the company has gone through and accomplished since the beginning.

Beer Launching Fridge

This I would consider a out of the three options. Mostly because he took something then made it better and easier for the consumer, and pimped it out in my opinion.

Burton Snowboards

This commercial I would consider a change of modding the original. He states in the beginning that they first started off very basic, then with time and practice, and applying the things the learned they were able to update it and work out the kinks.

Aquarium Computer

This is again a example of a pimp. They took all original parts then added some outside parts to create a fave superior and visually pleasing final product. I\

Hp Commercial

A modification for your world. Where this product modifies your actions, and turns them into something more spectacular.

Aquarium Computer.

A hack. It takes your basic computer essentials, tears them down, and improves the performance in quite an alluring way. A reworking of the norm.

Beer Launching Fridge.

A pimped out refrigerator. It takes an average fridge, and "tricks it out" to be more than it is. It's a sort of extraneous add on. But awesome.

Ryan Kempson said...

Aquarium Computer--> This is definately a PIMPed computer. I consider something as being pimped when there are things done to it to make it more apealing to the eye and not so much its performance. I suppose the liquid might help it stay cool, however this computer is just meant to look wicked cool.

Beer Launching Refridgerator--> This is a great MOD. I consider a MOD as a product with features added to it to make the users life easier or to make teh product to be capable to perform better. This beer launcher does just that. I personally love this idea and think it makes life incredibly easy.

Honda Makes Rube Goldberg--> This is a brilliant commercial especially for being HACKED up. I think of being hacked up as something beign just beat up, torn apart or in pieces. Honda did a great job at disassembling a car and using pieces of it that are recognizable to the general public and have them lead to the main product. I really enjoyed watching this.

Burton Snowboard HP

I would consider this commercial to be a mod. I think this because he explained how he started making snowboards and kept making them better. Because of all these mods to his snowboards he has been able to stay in business.

Beer Fridge

I would consider this to be a pimp. This is because it can not get much cooler than a fridge that can throw you a beer so you do not have to get up. It is a pimp because he did something to the fridge to make it better and more efficient.

Honda Meets Run Goldberg

I consider this to be a mod. I say this because they did not mash it up or pimp it out to make it better. They simply turned it into something else. They modified the original car to be something else.

Honda meets Rune Goldberg

I felt that this commercial was a hack and a mod. they took apart the car completely and showed you each piece and what goes into the car they then modified the car by putting it back together into something completely new.

HP Vera Wang

I felt like this commercial was showing how to make something better than its original state and that is the definition of mod. she was taking things and wasnt happy with them so she was mashing them and modifying the images so i would say that its also a mash up.

Beer launching fridge

I felt like the beer launching fridge is an example of pimp. I feel like its pimp because they thought of a very creative idea and put this thing together so it could be more appealing and convenient for others.

davetardif said...

I think Gwen Stefani's HP spot was a pimp (even though she said 'mash-up'), basically took what would otherwise be a boring walk and pimped it out, making it catchy and cool.

The burton ad was also a pimp. They took stock snowboard footage, and added the cool digi-trails in the snow spray, the voice-over clearly shows how they took what was being done, pimped it... result-snowboarding.

Michel Gondry's video was a Mash-up, taking tons of different clips/styles/music and cut they up, spliced them together, put them in a blender, and this mash-up was the result.

alisafiaaa said...

Honda
I would consider the Honda commercial to be a hack. The car is completely taken apart showing all the intricate parts that are put together to form the accord station wagon. When you hack something you make changes to it and with all the little pieces separated from each other it shows the hacked version of the final product.

Beer Launching Refrigerator
I consider the beer launching refrigerator to be pimped. There are changes made to the mini fridge but the beer launcher is something that is added to it hence why I believe it to be pimped out. When you pimp something you are making it better and more pleasing than it originally was which is what is done here. In my opinion if all fridges had these, the world would be a much happier place.

Burton
I believe the Burton HP commercial to be mod. He is even saying in the commercial how he used to make snowboard in his garage because they couldn’t afford the proper equipment. Starting out simply over time they were able to update it and once they made enough money could modernize it.

Robert Ormond said...

The Honda commercial to me is really a good example of moding. When you mod something you have to open something up and do a change to it to make it better and this video shows that is exactly what they did and make it a better thing.

This next video is a video for a 3d scene creator for commercials. I would definitely have to say this shows a example of pimping because you are able to do so many different things with technology is it amazing and you can basically change what ever you want.

The Burton snowboard is definitely a pimp. The snowboard has been around for a very long time and it has been changed around in so many different ways and has changed in so many different ways that anything that is done to it now would have to be a pimp.

Eika said...

I think the Honda meets Rube Goldberg is a mod commercial. It shows how each individual piece is modified for better performance, so it will all work great when it's put back together.

The HP Michael Gondry commercial is a pimp. It shows off the new features of a product, shows how pretty it can make everything. Making things pretty and fancy is practically the definition of a pimp.

I think the Burton Snowboard HP is a hack commercial. It clearly does what can't be done in real life, by trailing the photos behind the snowboarders. That requires a decent amount of work to put in; a hack.

Honda meets Rube Goldberg
This is such a cool video; I’d say it’s a hack and a mod together. It’s a hack because took apart the car he used all the parts found in that particular Honda. It’s a mod because he used all the parts in ways they were not supposed to be used in.
HP Michael Gondry Commercial
This video is a mash-up. It’s a mash-up because it uses multiple image types. It used real people, cartoons, and cut up paper. Each one looked different but still did what he wanted it to do. I enjoyed how he talked about what he did as he showed you.
Beer Throwing Fridge
That might be the coolest thing I’ve seen. This is defiantly a pimp. Who else has a fridge with a remote so you can get a beer without standing up? I also liked the quote at the end “There is no off position on the genius switch.”

I thought that the Accord commercial was really cool. I thought that it showed the car being hacked up. It showed a bunch of different car parts and at the end it started the car. It was very fascinating to watch. It was cool how it showed all the parts of the car and at the end it showed all the parts together.
